World Water Thirstday: March 7th

worldwater

World Water Thirstday will be taking place on March 7thon the U of A campus. It will be a day focused on bringing awareness of the current water crisis to everyone on campus.

2013 has been declared by the United Nations as the International Year of Water. The Year will highlight the history of successful water cooperation initiatives, as well as identify burning issues on water. This is where the idea of hosting World Water Thirstday began.

The hosts {listed here} of this World Water Thirstday recognized that there was potential to join in on the action and do their part on creating awareness and calling the students to be active in alleviating one of the largest issues in the world.

On March 7th there will be speakers in classrooms across campus as well as booths set up in the Connections Lounge where students will be able to hear from some of the leading non-profits that are working to fight against this issue.

The night will end with a film screening of La Source a documentary by Generosity Water at 7pm in the Union Theater. {check out the trailer here}

Volunteer with the Boys & Girls Club!

Ever thought about getting involved with the Boys and Girls Club here in Fayetteville? Take a look at Autumn’s experience:

I have been involved with the Boys & Girls Club volunteering since Early December of 2012. My son has been attending their after school & summer program since 2011 when we moved here from Hot Springs. Since I am a second semester grad student here at the U of A I decided I needed to get some experience under my belt, so I thought it would be great to volunteer. I volunteer twice a week and I am designated right now to the art room where kids of all ages can draw, color, paint, doodle, and even learn how to take their skills to a new level! Ms. Leah is the art teacher and has been for quite some time, she is great with the kids and has shown me a thing or two about dealing with larger groups of children. The most rewarding moment is when I walk in the door and kids run up and hug me. Just makes me feel so welcome! The B&G Club is a great organization that is really all about the kids and about reaching out to those in need.

We are open from 8am-8pm Mon-Thur and 8am-1pm Fri.  We have classes at five levels ranging from the most basic to very advanced.
We are located on the UofA Red bus line, only a half block’s walk from the stop on Sunbridge/Keystone.
Anyone interested in learning English can begin immediately after completing the short intake process.
We are also always looking for volunteer tutors and classroom instructors.  One hour per week can make a huge difference in someone’s life.   There is no need to speak a foreign language.  We will provide free training and material.

Crohn’s and Colitis Volunteers Needed

Volunteers/Interns Needed
Committed volunteers from our community are needed to help in the fight against Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Basic support services are needed to start The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation in Arkansas.  I am a mom with a passion trying to reach as many Crohn’s and Colitis patients in Arkansas by bringing this Irritable Bowel Community together for the first time.  I have so many ideas to help the 13,000 Arkansans that suffer in silence, but can’t pull this off by myself!!!!

The Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation needs are:

  • Basic Computer work
  • Mail-outs, phone outreach
  • Event planning
  • Grant writing
  • Seeking Sponsorships
  • Planning our signature Take Steps walk in Northwest Arkansas in the Fall
  • Media Networking (facebook, twitter, etc.)
  • Research on other non-profits and fundraising idea’s
  • Research outreach opportunities
  • Internship opportunities

These opportunities are very flexible and can work around your schedule.  The work can be done at your home/dorm.  I will take anywhere from a few hours a month to 20 hours weekly.

If you would like to be involved in this important effort, please contact Kristin Trulock, ktrulock@ccfa.org, or (501) 590-8948.

This commitment shows how needed this is to the IBD community. These diseases are particularly hard on children who must learn to cope with special diets, multiple medications and a constant watch on every detail of their health. Please put your enthusiasm and strength to use in helping us raise awareness of these devastating diseases as we lend a hand to those who fight to overcome them.

-Kristin Trulock, Community Development Manager – Arkansas at Crohn’s and Colitis of America

a big THANK YOU!

Thanks to all those that donated or helped out the Full Circle Campus Food Pantry during their Homecoming food drive! Here’s a picture to show just how big the response was to this drive.  With 11,384 lbs. of food donated, we could not be more pleased! Keep up the good work Full Circle! And if you haven’t already, click the photo below and go “like” their Facebook page for all the up to date info on the program and how you can help volunteer your time to sort through this mass of donations!

Rexy’s Big Idea – A Day of Discovery

The Children’s Museum of Northwest Arkansas in collaboration with the Bentonville Public Library is hosting Rexy’s Big Idea – A Day of Discovery, at the Bentonville Library from 10:00-2:00 on Saturday, October 27, 2012. Volunteers are needed to assist with our Inventor’s Corner.

The Children’s Museum will host the Inventor’s Corner within the Celebrating the Inventions/Ideas of Benjamin Franklin exhibit. We will have bins of materials for children to create an invention of their own. We will help the creators, and keep the materials organized and restocked. We will have building and craft supplies, wire, string, and lots of duck/duct  tape. The children will name and display their invention, then take it home when they leave the event. This is a very popular activity at other children’s museums.

Interested volunteers can call the Children’s Museum office at 479-696-9280 or email us info@nwachildrensmuseum.org  for more information.
